The World’s Largest Steam Hoist Is Parked Above Hancock. It Never Got to Do Its Job.

Drive north out of Hancock on US-41 and the hill on your right is wearing a building. It is tall, it is red brick, and it has far more windows than anything industrial has a right to have.

Inside that building is a machine that no longer has a competitor, because nobody will ever build another one. The Nordberg hoist at the Quincy Mine is the largest steam hoisting engine in the world. It has been sitting still since before most of the people reading this were born.

The mine they called Old Reliable

The Quincy Mining Company was organized in 1846, in the first frantic years of the Copper Country rush. Most of the outfits that formed in that stampede went broke fast. Quincy did not. It paid its shareholders a dividend for 53 consecutive years, and between 1863 and 1867 it was the most productive copper mine in the United States. The nickname it earned, Old Reliable, was accountants’ praise, not poetry.

The No. 2 shaft did not go straight down. It followed the copper, angling into the hill at roughly 55 degrees, and it kept following it. By the time the mine stopped in 1945, that shaft ran about 9,260 feet along the dip — close to a mile and three quarters of hole, the longest in the world at the time.

A machine built for a hole that was supposed to keep going

Here is the logic that produced the thing in the hoist house. Every foot deeper meant more cable, more weight, more time per trip. By 1916 the existing hoist could not keep up, and the company was not planning for the shaft to stop. It was planning for the shaft to get much deeper.

So Quincy ordered a hoist sized for a mine that did not exist yet. The building went up in 1918. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers dates the finished machine to 1920 and made it Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark No. 96 in August 1984.

The numbers are hard to hold in your head. The winding drum is 30 feet across. It carries almost 27 tons of wire rope. Two cross-compound Corliss engines drive it directly, with cylinder bores of 32 and 60 inches and a 66-inch stroke, producing 2,500 horsepower at 34 revolutions per minute on steam at 160 pounds per square inch. The whole assembly rests on what was, when they poured it, the largest reinforced concrete engine foundation ever made.

What all that bought

A skip — the ore car that rides the shaft — weighed six tons empty. Loaded with ten tons of rock, the Nordberg brought it up the incline at speeds reaching about 36 miles an hour. That is a twenty-ton object moving up a mile-plus of angled tunnel at highway speed.

And it was efficient, which is the part engineers still find satisfying. Bigger, faster, and cheaper to run all at once: in its first year the new hoist saved the company $16,080 in fuel.

The part that stings

It never got to do the job it was designed for.

The shaft did go deeper after 1920, but it never approached the drum’s capacity. Copper was already moving west, to open pits in Montana and Arizona that could produce it far cheaper than a mile-deep hole in the Keweenaw. Quincy suspended operations in 1931, worked again briefly during the Second World War, and shut for good in 1945. The largest steam hoist ever built spent most of its existence as a very expensive room ornament.

It is the whole Copper Country story in one machine: enormous confidence, enormous engineering, arriving right as the ground shifts. The men who worked those shafts left, the company towns thinned out, and the equipment stayed.

Can you actually see it

Yes, and it is worth the stop. The Quincy Mine Hoist Association runs the site at 201 Royce Reed Road in Hancock, just off US-41 across the lift bridge from Houghton. Guided tours take you into the No. 2 shaft house, past the hoist itself, and down the hillside on a cog tram to walk into the mine tunnels. The site is part of Keweenaw National Historical Park.

Tours are seasonal and hours change year to year, so check before you drive up. But stand in front of that drum once and the scale of what happened here stops being an abstraction.
