Correction and sourcing update — July 12, 2026: Yooper Hub reconstructed this article after a source review found that an earlier version included details not supported by the records it cited. Unsupported claims about reported victims, payments, non-delivery, use of a “borrowed” address, and the operators’ location were removed. The warning below is attributed directly to the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office; consumer guidance is attributed to the Federal Trade Commission.
The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office warned on June 23 about an equipment-sales website calling itself SteelPeak Equipment Group and using a Bessemer address. The office’s instruction was direct: “do not conduct business with them.”
In the warning, the Sheriff’s Office said the website used Google Earth imagery and artificial intelligence to build what the office described as an elaborate profile. The office also said the site appeared to be based in Malaysia and that it had reported the site to the domain provider. Those are the Sheriff’s Office’s findings. Yooper Hub has not independently identified the site’s operators or verified their location.
What the public domain record shows
Verisign’s public registration record shows that steelpeakequipmentgroup.com was registered April 10, 2026. When Yooper Hub checked the record and DNS on July 12, the domain had client hold status and did not resolve. The record showed a June 25 last-changed date. Domain status can change, and a similar-looking address could appear later, so this article does not link to the suspected site.
The available records do not establish who operated the site, whether its listed street address belonged to another party, how many people contacted it, whether anyone paid it, or whether equipment was promised and not delivered. Yooper Hub is not making those claims.
How to check an online equipment seller
The Federal Trade Commission recommends researching a seller and its recent reviews across several sources, checking written return and shipping terms, examining whether photos show the actual item, and using a safer payment method such as a credit card. The FTC also cautions that an https address shows encryption, not that a seller is legitimate.
- Verify the business using contact information you found independently, not only the number or email on an advertisement.
- Ask for current, item-specific photos and documentation, and keep copies of every message and written promise.
- Be cautious if a seller insists on wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, cash, or payment outside a marketplace’s protected system.
- Stop if the seller creates urgency or will not answer ordinary questions about the item, inspection, delivery, returns, or payment protections.
If you sent money or personal information
The FTC says to contact the bank, card issuer, wire-transfer company, payment app, gift-card company, or other payment provider immediately, explain that the transaction was connected to suspected fraud, and ask whether it can be reversed. Its payment-specific recovery guide lists the appropriate first steps. Reports can be filed at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. People seeking to make a local report can use the contact information on the official Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office page.
This page remains temporarily excluded from search indexing pending a named public-safety or standards editor’s review. Yooper Hub will recheck the Sheriff warning and domain record immediately if the agency corrects its warning, a case or arrest is announced, the domain returns or transfers, a look-alike appears, or the image-rights record changes.

Verification note: Aug 21 recheck: no sheriff correction, arrests, documented losses, or domain news since the June 23-24 coverage; press silent since. Sheriff FB page rechecked in a logged-in session; recent posts (hiring, K9) unrelated and deeper timeline would not paginate. The scam domain was never published, so its status stays unverifiable.
