For years, the little city of Escanaba tried to get it to come. This weekend, it finally happened — and the whole downtown turned out to watch a giant wiener drive by.
The Wienermobile Came To The U.P.
It’s one of the most recognizable vehicles in America: 27 feet of hot-dog-shaped glory, riding on a bun, cruising down the street.
And this weekend, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile rolled right into downtown Escanaba.
The iconic vehicle made a special appearance at the first-ever Ludington Street Cruise car show on May 29 and 30 — and according to TV6, motor enthusiasts of all ages lined the streets to catch a glimpse.
A Goal Years In The Making
Getting the Wienermobile to town wasn’t easy. The local committee had been trying for years.
“It’s an iconic vehicle—and at this point, you could call it a classic,” said Kurt Strassler, general manager of Elmer’s County Market and a member of the Ludington Street Cruise committee. “They’ve tried for years to bring it to past car shows, so we’re excited to finally make it happen.”
This year, they finally pulled it off — and the timing was perfect for the brand-new event.
A New Chapter For A Beloved Tradition
Here’s what makes it extra special for locals.
The Ludington Street Cruise is carrying on the legacy of the Krusin’ Klassics Fun Run — a cornerstone Escanaba community event that ran every summer since 1985.
After the car club hosted its 41st and final Fun Run in 2025, the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority stepped in to keep the tradition alive.
“It’s so important that another group got together and said we have got to keep this going,” said local business owner Mark Ammel.
Meet The Driver — “Relish”
The Wienermobile is piloted by trained “Hotdoggers,” and the one who brought it to Escanaba clearly fell in love with the place.
Hotdogger “Relish” Raena Sinclair said she and her co-pilot squeezed in a Lake Michigan adventure before the event.
“It is absolutely gorgeous being right next to Lake Michigan,” she said. “Actually, me and Miles the Smiles Emma, right before this event, went kayaking this morning and we had so much fun. The people have been greeting us so well… they are so kind and friendly.”
And landing the gig is no small feat. Sinclair was one of over 7,000 applicants for the job of piloting her Wienermobile, nicknamed “Corn Dog #4.”
A Little Piece Of Americana
There are only six Wienermobiles in the entire fleet, and 11 different models have rolled out since the very first one debuted back in 1936.
For one weekend, one of them belonged to the U.P. — drawing crowds, handing out Wiener Whistles, and reminding everyone that sometimes the simplest things bring a whole town together.
