State Fair opens this afternoon at 5 p.m. in Escanaba and runs through August 23, and the story explains why it is the only state fair Michigan has left: every U.P. county and the Hannahville Indian Community took it over when the state cut both fairs loose in 2010, and it drew its biggest crowd on record, 87,750, in 2017.
