Before you go
- The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 16, 2009: 52 acres, 83 buildings, 69 of them contributing (Wikipedia).
- The buildings are mostly two stories or fewer in brick and stone, built after the 1887 fire under a fire code that required brick or stone inside set limits (Wikipedia).
- The Village Hall and Fire Station at 401 Calumet Street opened in 1902, designed by Charles K. Shand in Richardsonian Romanesque style. It still serves as the village hall, with offices, a fire hall, a council room and a large hall with a stage (MTU Copper Country Architects). Village phone (906) 296-9911.
- The village website says the hall was built in 1901 and names the architect “Charles Strand”; Wikipedia and MTU give Charles K. Shand.
