Having a kid is expensive, and the bills tend to pile up at the worst possible time — right when a new baby shows up and money’s already tight. So here’s some genuinely good news for Yooper families: there’s a program now open across the entire U.P. that puts real cash in the hands of expecting parents and new moms, and you don’t have to pay it back.
It’s called Rx Kids, and as of this spring, it covers every single county in the Upper Peninsula.
What You Actually Get
The numbers are straightforward. Approved families receive $1,500 during pregnancy and then $500 a month for the baby’s first six months — adding up to as much as $4,500 to help with the cost of welcoming a new little one.
And here’s the part that makes it different from a lot of assistance programs: the money is no-strings-attached. It’s not income-restricted, there’s no catch about how you spend it, and it’s the same for everyone who qualifies — whether you’re in Marquette or the smallest town in the county. Diapers, groceries, the heat bill, a car repair so you can get to your doctor’s appointments — it’s your call.
Who Qualifies
The program is open to families who are at least 16 weeks pregnant, or who have a baby born on or after March 1, 2026.
And the big news this spring is that it now covers the entire Upper Peninsula — all 15 counties. The program started a year ago in five eastern U.P. counties (Alger, Chippewa, Luce, Mackinac, and Schoolcraft), and this spring it tripled its reach to add the other ten: Baraga, Delta, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Marquette, Menominee, and Ontonagon.
So wherever you are up here, you’re covered.
It’s Already Working
This isn’t just an announcement — Yooper families are already getting the money. In just the first stretch after the expansion, 121 families across Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties had already enrolled, totaling about $189,000 in payments as of early April. Down in the eastern U.P., where the program launched a year earlier, it’s delivered roughly $1.7 million to more than 500 families.
That’s real money landing in real U.P. households, right when families need it most.
How to Apply
Applying is done online at RxKids.org. That’s where you’ll find the full eligibility details, the application itself, and answers to specific questions about your situation.
A quick, honest note: programs like this have specific rules and deadlines, and your individual eligibility depends on your county, your due date, and other details. So treat this article as a heads-up that the program exists — and head to RxKids.org for the official word on whether you qualify and how to sign up.
The Bottom Line
The U.P. doesn’t always get a lot of attention when it comes to programs like this — so it’s genuinely something to see a first-in-the-nation effort land here, covering every county, with no strings attached. If you’re expecting, or you just had a baby, it’s worth five minutes to check it out. And if you know someone up here who’s expecting? Pass this along.
