Barnes-Hecker Centennial: 51 Men, 41 Still Inside

Fifty-one men died in the Barnes-Hecker mine west of Ishpeming on November 3, 1926, when the ground above the workings gave way and the mine filled with quicksand and water in about fifteen minutes. One man, 22-year-old Rutherford Wills, climbed about 800 feet of ladders out. Forty-one of the dead were never recovered. Ely Township dedicated a memorial park at the shaft on October 17, with a plaque for every miner. On November 3 at 11:20 a.m., church bells in Ishpeming and Negaunee toll fifty-one times.
